david bowielandmark album from 1972 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars came out 50 years ago last June, and to commemorate this milestone, two special vinyl collections will be released that month.

The first is a limited edition half-speed mastered Ziggy Stardust LP, while the second is a picture disc containing the same master and packaged with a promotional poster replica. Both discs are due out on June 17, a day after the 50th anniversary of the Ziggy Stardust original UK release of the album.

The new master for LP was created using restored masters from the original master tapes of Bowie’s sessions at Trident Studios in London.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars was Bowie’s fifth album and his first to break into the top 40 of the Billboard Chart 200, peaking at 21st place. Although the record produced no US hit singles, it does contain many classic Bowie songs, including “Moonage Daydream”, “Starman”, “Ziggy Stardust”, and “Suffragette City”. The record is a loose concept album focusing on the Ziggy Stardust character created by Bowie, a bisexual alien rock star, and his mythical backing band, The Spiders from Mars.

Meanwhile, Bowie and his real band took on the characters of Ziggy and The Spiders from Mars in concert, until David dramatically declared onstage at the end of a July 1973 show at London’s Hammersmith Odeon that the band had played their last gig.

Today’s announcement of the forthcoming vinyl records coincides with the 50th anniversary of the release of the album’s lead single, ‘Starman’, which reached No. 10 in the UK.
