Opening of the immersive exhibition “Future Shock” at 180 Studios – The Vinyl Factory

Featuring UK and world premieres from Actual Objects, object blue, Lawrence Lek and a host of pioneering artists.

Fact and 180 Studios are launching a major new exhibition, titled Future Shockat 180 The Strand in London, from April to August.

With 14 leading international artists and collectives working at the cutting edge of audiovisual technology, Future Shock transforms the underground spaces of 180 Studios through fascinating and pioneering digital technology – from generative and interactive algorithms, AI and 3D digital mapping, to spellbinding laser work, holographic projections and groundbreaking electronic music.

Featuring many UK and world premieres, the exhibition celebrates artists at the pinnacle of sound and vision who are redefining space to create a new kind of artistic experience. It includes: Ryoichi Kurokawa, Caterina Barbieri, Actual Objects, United Visual Artists, GENER8ION (aka Romain Gavras and Surkin),, Gaika, Tundra, Ben Kelly, NONOTAK and object blue.

Weirdcore will present an all-new commission with a soundtrack from frequent collaborator Aphex Twin, while Floating Points will provide an original score for an installation by Hamill Industries. Lawrence Lek will also present a new 180 Studios commission featuring a score from Hyperdub founder Kode9.

Caterina Barber, Vigil2020.

Pioneer of sound, the revolutionary Italian electronic artist Caterina Barbieri presents her first installation, Vigil. A multimedia collaboration with Ruben Spini, the installation creates a total environment, bringing together musical, visual and sculptural elements to explore the transformative power of sound and vision. A new commission from 180 Studios, the central element of the installation is a portal that symbolically connects to Barbieri’s idea of ​​music as a gateway to the transcendence of time and space.

Gaika, Convo 2.2 Faith Complex2022.

An “Infrastructure for Reverse Worship” driven by real-time conversation with a GTP-3 chatbot called Herbie, this new 180-studio commission sees London-based multidisciplinary artist and musician Gaika consider ethics, horror, the work and theology of AI in an architectural study of film, sound and sculpture.

United Visual Artists, Vanishing Point2022.

A new iteration of one of UVA’s most iconic and compelling installations. Commissioned by 180 Studios, Vanishing Point employs perspective as a tool to reshape and redefine space, creating the illusion of light as physical material. A laser cuts the space to create different geometries, compositions and divisions in the room and transform our sense of perspective. The behavior of the work is unpredictable and without repetition, fluctuating between states in which the beams glide calmly towards more pulsating and energetic movements.

Ryoichi Kurokawa, subsets2020.

Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa’s digitally generated audiovisual works take multiple forms, including installations, recordings, and live concerts. Making its UK premiere, this site-specific iteration of subsets transposes the artist’s 3D digital mapping of architecture, ruins and nature into an immersive cube with quadraphonic and strobe sound to create a multi-layered experience that warps time and space.

Weird, Subconscious2022.

Inventing interfaces that push the boundaries between sound and image, Weirdcore is one of the UK’s leading audiovisual artists. Subconscious, a new commission from 180 Studios, is an abstract journey into the inner mind, with its countless potential pathways. It features an original soundtrack by frequent collaborator Aphex Twin, which disorients visitors from reality by exploring the phenomenon of lucid dreaming.

GENERATION, Neo Surf2021.

Making its UK premiere in Future Shock, GENER8ION is a new project from French filmmaker Romain Gavras and electronic producer Surkin. Set in the year 2034, GENER8ION’s triptych cinematic installation is a tale of the future with a lowercase ‘f’, a future that contains moments that eerily resemble the present: an AI scanner capturing emotions, a hover wedding ring posing with a spaceship, teenagers enjoying flight surfboards. No sudden non-human threat, no end of the world, but a seemingly “normal” environment, underpinned by the threat of slow violence, just like the one we are experiencing right now.

A new order for 180 Studios, vicky imagines a world in which, rather than old power structures, brand data and playful interactions define the space. A desert environment with six human-scale LED screens housing digital humans and triggered by motion sensors allows for the storytelling of multiple experiences. A Los Angeles-based experimental collective, Actual Objects operates primarily as a creative studio, probing emerging digital spaces, metaverses, and the role technologies play in shaping frames of perception, aesthetics, and emotion.

NONOTAK, Reverie V.62021.

Distorting the relationship between space and time, the Franco-Japanese duo NONOTAK’s Dream weaves links between virtual and physical space, immersing the audience in a contemplative audiovisual experience., In the noise we trust2022.

A monumental, synaptic, site-specific installation by one of the world’s leading exponents of futuristic audiovisual art, In the noise we trust questions our notions of reality through a sound assault on the senses, plunging visitors into a sensory overload punctuated by the duo’s seductive analog score. “The noise will keep coming back,” say Alex and Kris of 404. “In the end, nothing can be contributed. Hamil Industries, Vortex2016/2022.

Recorded by an original score by Floating Points, Vortex is an interactive installation of light, smoke and sound that generates a series of rings of smoke that travel through space, suspending visitors’ sense of disbelief and disconnecting them from their surroundings. A creative studio based in Barcelona, ​​the founders of Hamill Industries, Pablo Barquín and Anna Diaz, combine computerized, robotic and video techniques to create pioneering experiences at the cutting edge of technology.

A new commission from 180 Studios, electronic musician object blue and creative collaborator Natalia Podgórska draws inspiration from their interests in metaverse, club music and creative freedom to produce an installation that imagines a world in which simulation theory is real, far from ideal synthesis of virtual and physical space.

Laurent Lek, Theta2022.

London-based artist Lawrence Lek expands his ‘sinofuturist’ cinematic universe with a futuristic short film, exploring alternative visions of technology, identity and non-human empathy. A new 180 Studios commission, Theta takes place in the aftermath of an environmental disaster, following the self-driving car Theta as it travels through the remnants of SimBeijing, a smart city turned ghost town. Produced entirely in Unreal Engine, this immersive single-screen work features an electronic soundtrack produced in collaboration with electronic musician and Hyperdub label founder Kode9.

Ben Kelly, Columns2022.

Legendary designer Haçienda Ben Kelly bridges the physical and the virtual with a new site-specific mirror version of his installation Columns featuring a large-scale interactive LED wall and a soundtrack by influential electronic musician Scanner.

Tundra, Line2020.

As a UK premiere, acclaimed collective Tundra’s Line The installation uses six holographic projectors to translate raw visuals driven by generative sound and data, from mathematics to 12 notes of the chromatic scale. In turn, Line transforms the nature of both the physical space that surrounds us and the virtual space imagined by work engineers.
