New analog physical music format combines vinyl and CD

It’s 2022 and another physical music format is on the way. (Yeah, we’re just as surprised as you are.)

Legendary producer T Bone Burnett is the driving force behind this new analog format called Ionic Originals, which is a unique combination of vinyl records and CDs. According to VarietyBurnett worked with Bob Dylan to re-record some of his most iconic songs for the sole purpose of releasing these recordings to introduce this “new ultra-high fidelity medium” to the masses.

Burnett said in a statement, “An Ionic Original is the pinnacle of recorded sound. It’s archival quality. It stands the test of time. It’s one of a kind. Not only is an Ionic Original the equivalent of a painting, but it is a painting. It is a lacquer painted on an aluminum disc, with a spiral engraved on it by the music. This painting, however, has the added quality of containing this music, which can be heard by putting a stylus in the spiral and spinning it.

The exact release date for this format is currently unknown, as is information on what type of device will be required to play an Ionic Original disc.
