Indrani had argued that proper procedure was not followed by the police when transferring the recorded conversation to the CD

A special CBI tribunal here on Wednesday rejected a plea by Indrani Mukerjea, one of the main defendants in the murder of Sheena Bora, that a CD of Rahul Mukerjea’s telephone conversation with her and former media baron Peter Mukerjea would be treated as evidence in the case. SP Judge Naik Nimbalkar rejected the plea, saying it was unnecessary at this stage of the trial.

Indrani had argued that proper procedure had not been followed by the police when transferring the recorded conversation to the CD. The CD was played in court during Rahul Mukerjea’s testimony as a witness.

Rahul, Peter Mukerjea’s son from a previous marriage, was in a relationship with Sheena when she disappeared. He had called Peter and Indrani about his disappearance and recorded the conversation as he suspected something was wrong. “The device from which the original content was transferred was malfunctioning and was tampered with,” Indrani’s app claimed.

The CD had been prepared by Khar police, who first investigated the case. Sheena Bora (24) was allegedly strangled to death in a car by her mother Indrani Mukerjea, driver Shyamvar Rai and Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. The body was burned in a forest in the nearby district of Raigad. The murder came to light in 2015 after Rai exposed the crime after his arrest in another case. Peter Mukerjea, Indrani’s then-husband, was also arrested for allegedly being part of the plot. He was released on bail in February 2020. Indrani was released on bail earlier this year.
