Bangor University concert to mark new female composers CD

VIOLINIST Mary Hofman and pianist Richard Ormrod will perform works by five British female composers at Powis Hall, Bangor University on Monday 5 September.

This live concert is part of the music department “Rethinking Women’s Work in Music Workshop” (September 5-6) and marks the launch of Ty Cerdd Records’ Unbroken Threads CD, which will feature all the pieces that will be performed by the duo in their recital.

The final three works – by Welsh composers Rhian Samuel, Hilary Tann and Sarah Lianne Lewis – were commissioned by the Rhyl Music Club for Beethoven-250’s birthday, to respond directly to Beethoven’s sonatas, and were performed by the duo in music clubs in Wales, alongside the complete Beethoven sonatas.

These new works are brought together with Welsh composer Steph Power’s haunting ‘Dreamtides’, and Eleanor Alberga’s tour de force ‘The Wild Blue Yonder’, to complete an exciting collection.

Recording for the album began at Tŷ Cerdd Studios in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and had to wait until spring 2021 for its final session.

Mary Hofman said: “As a recording made on either side of a global pandemic, the concept of unbroken threads, continuity through all the harshness of the two-year period, seems particularly appropriate.

“The title of the album was inspired by the words Beethoven uses in his Heiligenstadt Testament – and they relate the new works to their Beethoven-inspired commands.”

The concert will take place at Bangor University’s Powis Hall on Monday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Prior to the concert, Dr Rhiannon Mathias from Bangor University’s Department of Music will be joined for a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm by Deborah Keyser, manager of Ty Cerdd, and composers Rhian Samuel, Hilary Tann, Sarah Lianne Lewis and Stephen Power.

Tickets for the pre-concert conference (6:30 p.m.) and the concert (7:30 p.m.) are available at the Pontio box office.

The CDUnbroken Threads” is available for pre-order now and will be available for purchase on Tŷ Cerdd’s website and for streaming on all major platforms starting September 9.
